Thematic Education

Writing your Learning Plan for Home School Registration in Queensland Tips:

HEU want to see that you as their teacher can source and provide whats needed.

If you are unsure, use one of the templates provided by HEU.

The education program should show evidence of a high-quality education that:

a) is responsive to the changing needs of the child as indicated by the short and long term educational and personal goals.

HEU want to see some specific, achievable, academic, short term goals (within 1 year) and long term goals (within 2-5 years).

They want to read how you will be able to observe how the child is doing (record) and to then take those observations,

work out what they mean, and make any required adjustments to always be meeting your child's needs.

eg if too hard you found a solution, or too easy you increased the challenged.

b) has regard to the age, ability, aptitude and development of the child concerned.

HEU want to see that YOU know where your child is up to, their needs, strengths and challenges, and that you can SHOW how you have taken this into account

when making you plan.

Add details on how your child is, add in all their strengths and weaknesses, and give a picture of your child is also required during this stage.

c) is conducted in an environment conducive to learning.

HEU just want to know how you will modify and/or chose your child's surrounding to optimise your child's learning.

Eg, if they are very tactile maybe you will be incorporating the outside environment more, or if they get easily distracted how you will be reducing external noise etc.

They want to hear what your childs learning environment consists of, so provide a picture that explains where your child will learn.

d) is responsive to the child's need for social development.

This is where you can show all the ways your child will have contact with other people - peers, community etc. Again they like you to show how this relates to your child's

particular needs and temperament. They want to hear how you are strengthening friendships and creating a peer group for your child.

e) utilises suitable and relevant teaching strategies to deliver the educational program to the child.

HEU want to see that you know of the different Teaching Strategies (we have a document in UNITs to help or google it).

Or you will learn more so you can provide what your child needs based on their temperament etc.

eg short lessons to keep attention, no noise so a quiet environment, repetition etc.

f) engages the child in a range of rich and varied learning experiences.

HEU want to hear that you will provide more than just work books or one type of materials.

To provide a high quality education you should include a range of activities and resources and outings etc.

g) is supported by sufficient and appropriate resources.

They want the specifics of the books, websites, YouTube channels, documentaries etc.

They want the titles and actual examples of books so they can check you are using the right level and complexity for your child.

Include it all in the Resources sections of your Plan and be specific - its not enough to say Local Library books, websites etc.

A resource is everything from books, apps, websites, activities, classes, mentors etc. The more you mention, the better.

h) uses strategies for monitoring educational progress.

Every Learning Area or activities/themes etc that are planned, now require specific references to what you might produce that can be measured and monitored.

Its not enough to say you will take photos and keep a diary, they want to hear those and about specific outcomes that may be produced,

eg a poster on x y z, a spreadsheet, a play, evaluation checklist ect.

A Plan is needed each year with your Report for the following year.

I have added a Sample of a Goal Based, a Theme Based and a

Australian Curriculum Yearly Overview Plan below.

These plans have been written by the Queensland Education Unit (HEU).

Please feel free to download and read through these samples.

This will give you an idea of what information is required and accepted when

submitting your home school plan for approval with the HEU in Queensland.

At Thematic Education we utilise all three of these learning styles when creating

our unique curriculum program and when formulating lesson plans.
